International Training Workshop on Organic Matter Characterization Using Spectroscopic Techniques

19-21 May 2010
UNIVERSITY OF GRANADA, SPAIN

The meeting is open to all interested in the characterization of dissolved organic matter in marine and inland waters using spectroscopic techniques.

Aims of the workshop:

  • Facilitate interaction between professionals and students in small groups
  • Discuss methodological issues in break out groups
  • Discuss and add to recent dialogue on absorbance and fluorescence corrections
  • Discuss the utility of different indices (fluorescence index, humification index, spectral slope, slope ratio, etc.)
  • Discuss advantages of various fluorescence techniques (synchronous scan, 3D fluorescence, peak picking, PARAFAC fitting, PARAFAC modeling).
  • For those who are interested, learn PARAFAC modeling (but see next section)

To get the most out of this workshop, it would be beneficial for attendees to:

  • Have experience collecting UV-vis absorbance scans
  • Have experience collecting 2-D and/or  3-D fluorescence spectra
  • For those attending the PARAFAC training workshop, we recommend going through the PARAFAC tutorial ahead of time.
  • Have MATLAB on your computer
  • Come with questions.
  • Provide your input on the Discussion Groups poll.
